Public and products liability insurance for renewable energy businesses
Insurance broking for installers, importers, manufacturers and suppliers of commercial renewable energy products.
Public and products liability insurance may respond to covered third-party claims for injury or property damage arising from an insured business activity or product. The policy wording, insured activities and limits determine what is covered.
Liability insurance for installers and suppliers
Solar and battery businesses can combine installation work with product supply, maintenance, technical services and subcontracting. Insurers need a clear description of each activity and the products involved.
Exposures to describe
- Commercial solar, battery and EV charging installations
- Products imported, manufactured, branded or distributed
- Work at heights, electrical work and commissioning
- Subcontractors, labour hire and maintenance activities
- Product destination markets and annual sales
Important policy distinctions
Public liability and products liability can be provided under the same policy, but their insuring clauses and exclusions differ. A liability policy does not automatically cover the cost of replacing a defective product, rectifying the insured’s own work, product recall, performance guarantees or every contractual assumption of liability.
Insurers may set limits, sublimits, deductibles or exclusions for certain products, applications, territories or installation activities. We can review how the business is described and present relevant information to insurers.
Questions about renewable energy liability
Is products liability included for imported equipment?
It may be considered, but imported products and sales territories must be disclosed and accepted. Policy terms vary.
Does liability insurance cover property being worked on?
Policies often contain exclusions or restrictions for property in the insured’s care, custody or control or property being worked on. The actual wording needs to be checked.
